Grinding and Pressing Equipment . Overview. Whether you're a home cidermaker or a commercial cidery, if you're working with apples, you'll need to process them into juice. Solutions for this are varied, from home-built grinders made from garbage disposals up to multi-horsepower electric grinders and commercial cider presses.
A 5-gallon bucket sits under the hopper to catch the ground apples, held in place by a little wooden arm that swings out into position. Then we fill up the hopper and start grinding! A full pressing can be done when the bucket is about 3/4 full of pomace, which is close to 3.75 gallons.

We hadn't found a grinder, so our plan was to just cut them up small and use a grape press like this one to press the juice out. Apples are much tougher than grapes. We got no juice. We had enough people there that someone knew someone else with an apple grinder, however it was a completely manual one of terrible design.
