My title describes the thing. I found this sphere along with ~180 others at a scrap yard. The owner thinks they might have something to do with lasers or optics. The sphere is magnetic, and the cutout is rough (probably cast then turned/polished, or had the cutout EDM'd).
I am currently taking an intro course to mill and lathe work, so please bear with me if this is a stupid question. I have an idea for a project that I would like to make, and part of this project will involve turning spheres on the lathe with a radius ball turner and then drilling holes into these spheres at specific locations.
What is claimed is: 1. A method of making ceramic spheres, wherein the method comprises the steps of: preparing a cylinder-shaped core; disposing the cylinder-shaped core on a pair of rotating bodies arranged horizontally; rotating the rotating bodies; descending a core drill and bringing the core drill into contact with said core; and machining a sphere out of the core …
The Perfect Sphere™ Tool is a sphere and concave turning system adaptable to most lathes on the market. The heavy duty construction and flexible configuration allow you to turn spheres from 1 inch to 14 inches in diameter on most lathes from 10" to 25".
Introduction: My need for a ball turning tool began with the desire to build a Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder. The Grinder requires 18 ball handles that could be bought, but then it would not be quite the same. Thus the quest to build a Spherical Turning Tool. *** May02 Note: This turned out to be to big for the Quorn small ball handles.

A unique manual milling method is available for generating geometrically true spherical surfaces. This technique can be used to machine convex and concave spherical surfaces. Other than the milling machine, the only tools needed are a boring head and a rotary table. If you have a CNC lathe or mill, this is really just an academic exercise.
A Van de Graaff generator can produce extremely high potential differences (voltages). A small school version can pump a huge charge onto the top dome so that the potential difference between the dome and the earth can be 200 000 volts yet the total charge is so tiny that you only receive a small shock when you touch it. This makes possible dramatic demonstration …
Page 1 of 2 - Making a mold for spherical ball mill media - posted in Member Tutorials: I had alot of scrap lead lying around (leftovers from "scrap metal age" )so I decided to cast my own spherical media for the ball mill. It turned out very good and I would like to share my method with the rest of the community. Also I can't remember having encountered a thread …
Make a sphere with radius 1 and make a block out of it, ... If you use the sheet metal tools in Solidworks ... as well as a good which might show examples of detail drawings. Milling and turning and other machining operations are so different that I have to think differently when I design in sheet metal.
Step 4: Stainless Steel Alignment Rods. Next step is to make the steel alignment rods that come up from the bottom block of the ice ball maker. As I said before, they are 3/8" diameter. These rods need to be nearly--but not quite--the full height of the ice ball maker. I have chosen 138 mm out of the total 150 mm.
We have covered these spherical ice molds before. I have used one, myself, and they work pretty well. A chunk of ice is sandwiched between two halves of a metal mold, and fast conduction of heat away from the ice, through the metal, causes it to melt wherever the mold makes contact. The mold halves slide on rods to maintain their alignment, and gravity does …
Groove or slot milling is an operation in which side and face milling is often preferred to end milling. Slots or grooves can be short or long, closed or open, straight or non-straight, deep or shallow, wide or narrow. Tool selection is normally determined by the width and depth of the groove and, to some extent, length.
Made in 2 halves then welded together, probably with a compound J groove. You'd have to do the FEA to look at wall thickness, but it's going to be very heavy for a 6' diameter. You'd also better X-ray everything, including the welds. You should not need a coating for 316 or 317 SS, unless you need a special color.
You can also tilt the milling machine head if you have a Bridgeport type mill and are not afraid of tramming. You can make any radius of curvature, up to a point, by adjusting the relational angle between the head and turntable. With multiple passes and by resetting the angle between passes, very large objects can be made spherical.

This mill is going to come in really handy for lots of future projects. I hope this page gives helpful ideas to anyone in need of a ball mill. They are quick, easy, and cheap to build yourself. I need to add a disclaimer here for anyone thinking of using this sort of ball mill for milling gunpowder or other flammable or explosive powders.
how to machine a concave radius surface with no CNC or radius attachment. 1 1/4" bar stock. Machine a 7/16" radius into the bar 7/16" deep. I thought about using a indexer on a milling machine and rotating the bar about 12 positions. using a 7/8" cutter. And then just cleaning up with a file on a lathe.

tools, hand turning, milling with an angled rotary table, and lastly two methods with ball turning attachments on the lathe. I chose to make an at-tachment as illustrated in Photo 1. and this was from a plan in MEW Is-sue 26 December 1994. It is a good tool, well designed and gave me great satisfaction both to make and use.

Hi there. I'm in the process of fabricating a thingamajig and want to cut some bolt slots (as opposed to simple drilled holes) in ~1/4" mild steel plate so that the piece is adjustable. Something like ~1" long by 3/8" wide. I don't have a mill, which I suspect would be …
