Mill your own malt at home

The Grainfather mill is fully automatic electric drive, giving you a consistent speed of crush throughout your batch. The hopper takes 1kg of grain and can be topped up throughout crushing. The mill runs for six minutes before needing to cool down, which is enough to process enough for a standard size batch.

Crushin' It

Using a standard 2-roller homebrew mill, I crushed each malt using four different gap settings. The gap settings were 1.25 mm, 1.0 mm, 0.75 mm and 0.50 mm, and I used a feeler gauge to confirm these gap setting between each milling. After milling, I performed a grain sieve test on the different malts and crushes, and recorded all of the …

Do you crush microbes when you step on them?

Slipping through the cracks. It's clear that bacterial cell walls are very strong. But there's an added complication that makes it even harder to squish bacteria: They're incredibly small. The average bacterium is only about 1 to 5 microns or millionths of a meter (smaller than ten-thouh of an inch) in size.

Preparation of Bacterial Magnetosomes for Proteome Analysis

Abstract. Magnetotactic bacteria form unique prokaryotic organelles, termed magnetosomes, which consist of membrane-enclosed magnetite nanoparticles. Analysis of magnetosome biogenesis has been greatly facilitated by proteomic methods. These, however, require pure, highly enriched magnetosomes. Here, we describe the …

How to Crush Your Own Malts

Why Crushing Malts Matters. Both all-grain and extract brewing rely on properly milled malts. For all-grain brewing, the crush matters because it affects how well the starches, sugars, and enzymes present in the grain will be exposed to water during mashing. The mash activates enzymes in the grain and converts starches into the sugars …
